Putting diesel into a petrol vehicle can cause damage and inconvenience but putting petrol into a diesel vehicle and driving off can be catastrophic for the vehicle. Repairs can run into thousands of pounds and may involve replacing the whole fuel system.
Aside from the inconvenience of putting the wrong type of fuel in a car, it can be expensive to get the fuel tank drained before continuing a journey.
It may be that a comprehensive motor insurance policy covers misfuelling but not all do. Some will require an extra monthly premium to give misfuel insurance cover.
It is worth a customer their checking policy documents to see if a motor policy covers misfuelling.
